Yea, keep telling yourself that Tom

For some time now, I can’t say for how long, ( it doesn’t really matter though) I’ve been talking to myself. I’m a pretty quiet person usually and know I talk (out loud) way less than most people I ever met. Communication with other people is important, for sure. It’s how we learn about this crazy world. We also learn from books, videos, experiences, stories, what we see, hear, feel and countless other things. We give meaning to all the ‘things’ we encounter, and sometimes give undue meanings to things we shouldn’t.  I’ve heard at any given moment there . . . → Read More: Yea, keep telling yourself that Tom

Manana no more

Last week I took off from swimming and running because I didn’t feel well. This week, I felt much better, but still didn’t practice anything. I didn’t even do it in my head. The manana syndrome set in hard this week. I can always do it tomorrow, right? The problem with falling into this line of thinking is, you run out of tomorrows pretty quickly when you have a deadline. I have to remind myself that my deadline is not November 18, 2012, but way before that. OK, my new deadline is October 7, 2012. I want to be . . . → Read More: Manana no more

Under Pressure

I went to bed last night with my heart in my ears (or so it felt). The pressure in my sinuses kept any thought of sleep off the table (and bed). I tried concentrating on my breathing, but that didn’t last too long. After hours of tossing and turning, the alarm at 4:43am wasn’t a wake up call, but a reminder of how many hours I’d been up already. Unfortunately I wasn’t visited by three ghosts, nor did my brain have me do anything productive.

Was I supposed to have a night like that? Was I supposed to be . . . → Read More: Under Pressure

On the road again….

OHHHH, now I understand the joke about why Willie Nelson got hit by a car. Today was my first day back running. I went an incredible 2.5 miles and didn’t stop once. The first day back is always exciting (considering it’s my first official day back running ever). The surprisingly mild northeastern day in January was a bonus. I really can’t wait to get into full swing and get on the road again….everyday.

Swim with the fishes

Today was my first day back in training mode. I got up before the alarm and headed to the pool. Leading up to this morning, I hadn’t done one bit of physical activity for two months. I know that doesn’t sound too hard to do (the non-exercising part), but in two months you can lose a lot. I keep telling people that I have an advantage this year because I don’t have to learn how to swim and I already have a bike. So the two months of what was lost, I’ll make up from experience (or so I . . . → Read More: Swim with the fishes

If you don’t cry…

go find another website about Ironman…..

When I finished the race, I was toast. I went back to the hotel and passed out. Now anytime I ever go to an Ironman event I WILL stay till midnight. This video is from Arizona 2011. I wish I stayed. It really is the best Ironman finish ever….

It’s happening again!

It’s two full months after Ironman Arizona 2011. My alarm is set for 4:45 am Monday morning. Starting tomorrow, training begins.

I’m starting this year over 200 lbs, a weight which I haven’t been in years. I felt really good going into the 2011 race at 185lbs and lost over ten pounds the day of the race. I felt as if I ran out of steam at the end. You can see a huge difference in the way I look from the beginning of the day to the end. My thought for this year, was to race at about . . . → Read More: It’s happening again!

now…. the inevitable

I already signed up for next year’s Ironman Arizona. In fact, I did it before I even knew I could complete the first one. Those competing in the 2011 event had the ability to sign up for next year before anyone else the DAY BEFORE THE RACE this year. I had just gotten out of a confidence depleting practice swim in the lake, dried off and went right to the 2012 sign-up tent. Perhaps that was a little screwy, but it helped me get past the last fear I had about the following day.

just a swim after all

I’ll post a video when I can get one. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever been involved with before.

Right after the pro start at 6:50am, they allowed us to get into the water. The first people at the front of the line seemed to be taking their time, putting on their goggles and caps and walking orderly toward the water. The herd was moving slowly. When I passed under the chip reader on my way a different picture appeared. An almost panic frenzy stirred on by the volunteers as they tried to get everyone in the water before 7 . . . → Read More: just a swim after all

transition(s)

The alarm went off at 3:30 am, however I was already awake. I had my brown rice with sweet potatoes for breakfast before the 9 minute snooze alarm went off. Brushed my teeth, combed my hair, and picked up my bags that were packed the night before. All I had to do was get myself to ‘Transition’ (the place we needed to be before the race) before 6 am. I was working on 4 hours of sleep, two nights in a row. It may have been nerves, it may have been the pillows, but I’ll never really know specifically . . . → Read More: transition(s)
