TMI

“The internets” (as W would say) has so much information, it’s nearly impossible to know what’s right and what’s wrong when it comes to health, nutrition and training for a triathlon. No matter what thought process you have, there is another competing one that is directly opposite of what you think (and the argument is usually compelling too). Questions that should be pretty easy to answer or should have at least been figured out by now, are not. These are just a few:

Should you eat dairy before or after a workout?

If you are incorporating creatine in your workout, is it OK to keep caffeine in your diet?

Why do protein powders have both arginine and lysine in them when they cancel the other one out?

Is it acceptable to fuel ourselves with unnatural ingredients?

Is meat good or bad for your overall performance?

Should we be consuming a complete protein (including tryptophan- the sleep aid) before or after a workout?

What really is the best fuel source for endurance? Long chain fatty acids and flax seed, carbs, a protein blend, or something else?

There is entirely too much information out there to be comfortable with an ‘informed’ decision. My thought process may fly in the face of popular belief, but on this page, I’ll post what I eat, how I feel and the training I do, as I follow what I think is right for me at this moment (pretty much what we all do). So I’ll be adding to the information overload.

I have to go to sleep now because I have to wake up early to walk the dogs…… Was that TMI?

  • This will be an especially interesting piece in your journey. My prediction is that cow’s milk and unnatural ingredients won’t be helpful, as they generally cause more overall health challenges than benefits. Keep updating and flying in the face of popular opinion. Just because it’s popular, doesn’t make it good or right. Go Tom!

I cut all cow’s milk from my diet and have switched to almond milk. I don’t see the point of drinking it. It’s undigestable after we reach 2 years old becuse we don’t produce the enzymes to break it down and use it after the age of two. I don’t think I’m lactose intolerant, but even if I was lactose tolerant, I get no value from it at all. Not even taste. So, if you “got milk’… keep it, I don’t want it.
