Should I stay or should I go?

Got home early from work, the rain is holding off, and it’s a nice cool night. Should I stay or should I go? I used the stationary bike this morning and have to get up early to workout again in the am. Should I stay or should I go? I only have 28 more weeks to train for the ironman. Should I stay or should I go? The National Weather Service just issued a flood watch for the area. Should I stay or should I go?

I’ll let you know in 45 minutes when I get back, which one I chose.

amazing

Something truly amazing happened this morning. I’ve lost a few pounds in the last few weeks because of the amount of exercise I was doing. I eat a lot, but expend a lot of energy. My belt has been able to reach the next tighter hole, my shrunken (because they were put in a dryer) shirts no longer look tight and I’m glad I have a pull string that I can tie on my bathing suit or I’d be kicked out of the community center. I’m trimming down, though not entirely on purpose

But here comes the amazing part…. . . . → Read More: amazing

ahhhhh

My feet are on my desk, I’m only answering every third phone call, I have a cold water in my hand (with a straw!), and I’m taking it easy(ier) today. Since my tri consists of more than just running, swimming and biking, the conditioning part of the equation requires a day of rest. So I’m resting today (physically and mentally). In fact, I’m not even going to send this post through spell check.

So if you see me today in my slippers, long black socks and Hawaiian shirt, …… smack me in the head because that’s a ridiculous look.  Whatever . . . → Read More: ahhhhh

Somehow I believed I could

After rolling around for a better part of the night, body tingling from yesterday’s ride, I believed I could still get up today and run. Impossible yelled my quads! Are you nuts screamed my calves! But those body parts didn’t discourage me, I still believed I could. Seven AM rolled around and I got out of bed (come on, it’s the weekend I can sleep in). My shorts went on slowly, my wet (from yesterday’s ride) sneakers even slower, yet I still believed I could do it.

It was misting outside and the ground was wet from last night’s . . . → Read More: Somehow I believed I could

Is it just me?

The rain kept up all morning and afternoon, then finally came down in the last ten miles of my 51 mile long ride today. The trip took 3 hours and 14 minutes (which would take over 7 hours for the ironman distance). Halfway through the ride I met up with two friends that liked going fast. Any energy I had stored was used up pretty quickly, but I certainly didn’t let them know that. I learned how it felt to draft behind someone. What a big difference it makes when the person in front of you breaks wind. Let me re-word that… . . . → Read More: Is it just me?

I hope the rain keeps up

then it won’t come down…Wocca Wocca Wocca (dad’s joke with a Fozzy Bear ending).  Thanks for the horrible weekend weather report Hurricane Schwartz! I’ve been really looking forward to the weekend long rides. Over the past four weeks, I went from just being able to make 25 miles to doing 60 with energy to go more. That accomplishment in a short period makes me want to project it out…. so, by October 30th 2011 I should be able to go 6400 miles a day! (and I was worried about running out of the bike path doing only 50 miles, this is going to . . . → Read More: I hope the rain keeps up

triaTHlon THursday

Swimming thirty lengths in the pool no longer seems like a lot. Who just typed that? A few more weeks of doing a weekly “sprint distance” (1/2 mile swim, 3.1 mile run and 12.4 mile bike ride) triathlon, and I’ll be moving up to the ‘Olympic distance” (twice the distances). I know I’m almost ready for the swim and bike distances, I just have to wait for my running to catch up.

I was looking at my training schedule and I got nervous about how ambitious it is, then I get excited about how ambitious it is. Eventually triaTHlon . . . → Read More: triaTHlon THursday

If I can just get past the first mile

I’m not sure if it’s boredom or what, but the first mile every time I run is the toughest. I even had my best running tunes on this morning. My breathing is typically off, my stride is off and my arms are flailing over my head like a ghost on Scooby Doo (not the last one, but that would be funny to see).

The weird thing is, once I pass that first mile my body seems to adapt and I do something resembling running.  My pace picks up, my breathing is no longer labored and my arms stay straight, . . . → Read More: If I can just get past the first mile

“It’s 100% mental”

Tell that to my legs! When I have a conversation about doing the ironman, a get a common remark that ‘it’s all mental”. Though I wholeheartedly agree that your mind has a controlling interest in everything we do, there’s no denying that our bodies still have to do it.  My mind told me to get out of bed this morning by asking  if I was going to wimp out or be strong today, then my body moved. I got to the pool and my mind told me to jump in, my body felt the cool water as I did. . . . → Read More: “It’s 100% mental”

Fastest 12 miles so far!

Last night after work I needed to go for a 12 mile bike ride. That’s right, I needed to. My workout calendar says so. I have no choice, so that’s what I did.

I took the Schuylkill River Path (soon to be renamed Super Fast, Tire Blazing, Stretch of the Schuylkill River Path) from Norristown to Valley Forge. I wasn’t necessarily wanting to go fast, but as soon as I passed the Norristown Transportation Center, my legs took control. The goal for the night became: to say “on your left” many times and not hear it once. As a courtesy to pedestrians, . . . → Read More: Fastest 12 miles so far!
