10/30/10 forever

As a way to increase my lung capacity and get my lymph system moving and working properly, I’m taking deep breaths. Breathing as follows: 10 deep breaths, held for 30 seconds, 10 times a day. I’ll be increasing the time holding my breath as I get in better shape.

Why would I think that my lymphatic system needs a helping hand? As we workout, our body produces lactic acid, toxins are released from our cells, dead cells and blood proteins are hanging around when we don’t want them too.  Our lymph system works in harmony with our blood by . . . → Read More: 10/30/10 forever

50,000

What’s the difference between none and 50,000 (besides the spelling)? Well….I’m going to find out. Last year I didn’t complete one sit-up successfully. By Sunday, November 21, 2011, I will have completed 50,000 sit-ups. As part of my training, I think it’s extremely important to have really good core muscles. On the right sidebar of this website, I’ll be updating the total amount of sit-ups (including all forms of crunches) among other things to keep myself accountable.

They are quite boring. The only exciting part is adding them to the total.

Yo Adrian!

We all have a Rocky story inside of us. Some are more public than others. Some are giant accomplishments. Some have a hint of danger, and some are just for fun. But all of them are very personal. Setting out on our own, overcoming obstacles, navigating uncharted waters, overcoming fear and growing into the person we want to be, is the goal.

How much fun is it when you can look back and smile because you know all the hard work paid off. The pain, the fear and the obstacles are a thing of the past. Not that . . . → Read More: Yo Adrian!

Good Call Phil…..NOT!

It seems that spring has sprung a leak! I don’t mind running in this weather as long as it’s downhill with the 20 mph wind to my back.  It looks like a few more days/nights working out indoors.

Good call Phil!

Spring has sprung! Well, at least it got into the 40′s and I had a chance to jog with Coal. We went just slightly further than last time and a little quicker. That’s pretty much all I can ask for.

You decide for yourself

How do you know if you had a good workout, meal, or if you are thinking properly?

How do you know if you were successful in giving your all and going for it?

How do you know when you had enough?

How do know if you should be trying something new or trying harder?

How do you know what you’ll learn from this experience?

How do you know you were successful?

How do you know you failed?

You decide for yourself. Nothing and no one outside of you can determine that for you. Only you can give yourself permission . . . → Read More: You decide for yourself

I would walk 500 miles

I have the distinct pleasure in my business to search for used cars at an auction. Every Wednesday and Friday morning I wake up and drive to the auction with a list of cars in my hand. Once there I walk the entire lot hunting for the cars on my list. The parking lot at Manheim PA is so big, the auction has shuttle buses to take you to separate parts of the auction. I wore my gps watch and walked a total of 6.6 miles on this fine Friday morning. Though I do put on the miles walking, I . . . → Read More: I would walk 500 miles

TMI

“The internets” (as W would say) has so much information, it’s nearly impossible to know what’s right and what’s wrong when it comes to health, nutrition and training for a triathlon. No matter what thought process you have, there is another competing one that is directly opposite of what you think (and the argument is usually compelling too). Questions that should be pretty easy to answer or should have at least been figured out by now, are not. These are just a few:

Should you eat dairy before or after a workout?

If you are incorporating creatine in your workout, is . . . → Read More: TMI

Relax, it’s just quinoa.

Among the many benefits of eating quinoa, the effect of having relaxed blood vessels is of particular importance for the flow of red blood cells, oxygen and nitric oxide (NO). That flow is so important in exercise.

Do as many as you can

Right now I’m concentrating on building a base of muscles that have the ability to endure prolonged use. During workouts, I’m doing multiple sets of high numbered reps. For instance, this morning I did 160 curls with a 20 lb weight. I’m placing that demand on my muscle over a longer period of time. By lifting a 50lb weight ten times wouldn’t give my muscle the same demand. It would be asking it for short powerful bursts instead of consistent use under load for a longer period. My workouts will tend to be longer, but that’s what I’m shooting . . . → Read More: Do as many as you can
